Use and Care

Mindful Use

  • Microwave Safety: Avoid placing Bizen ware in the microwave. Its unglazed clay composition may cause uneven heating or cracking due to thermal shock. Additionally, metallic elements from firing patterns can spark, risking damage to both the piece and the appliance.
  • Oven Use: Bizen ware can handle gradual heat increases, but always place it in a cold oven and allow it to warm with the temperature rise. Avoid preheated ovens to prevent cracks. Protect your Bizen ware from sudden temperature changes. For example, do not move it from the fridge directly into a hot oven, or rinse it with cold water while it’s still hot. Sudden shifts in temperature can cause breakage.
  • Gentle Hand-Wash Only: Avoid dishwashers as the high pressure and strong detergents can weaken the pottery and dull its natural finish. Instead, hand wash gently with a soft sponge and mild detergent. Allow your Bizen ware to dry completely before storing to prevent moisture retention, which could lead to mold growth.

  • Proper Surfaces: Avoid using Bizen ware on unforgiving surfaces like stone or metal, which could scratch or damage the unglazed pottery.
  • Safe Storage: Store your Bizen ware in a secure location where it is protected from accidental drops or collisions.
  • No Open Flame: Do not expose Bizen ware to direct flames or stovetops, as uneven heating may compromise its integrity.
